Our Dojo
One school, one family, one path.
Headquartered in room no. 6 of the Santarém Municipal Sports Hall, we currently train in the multipurpose room of the same building. We are a group of attentive, organised, proactive and balanced people whose main goal is to practise Wado Ryu Karate-Do according to the legacy of Sensei Hironori Ohtsuka Meijin, founder of the style.
With a strong focus on competitive karate, we are committed to developing athletes — above all the younger ones — so they can enjoy great moments on the national karate scene, showcasing the Wado Ryu Karate-Do school at the highest competitive level.

Karate helps children grow up more confident, focused and respectful — on and off the tatami.
Character

History
AIKW: past, present and future
Founded in Santarém in 1993, AIKW has taken the Wado Ryu style — “the way of harmony” — to tatamis across Portugal and Europe. Discover our roots.
- 1993
AIKW is born
The Associação Independente de Karate-Do Wado Ryu is founded on 23 May. Schools open in several towns in the Santarém district, and a first team travels to the Guadalajara International Tournament in Spain.
- 1994–95
First international steps
Competing in Milan (Italy), Guadalajara (Spain) and at the Guildford International Championship (England).
- 1999
Joining APKW and WKA
AIKW joins the Portuguese Wado Ryu Karate-Do Association (APKW) and the Wado Ryu Karate-Do Academy, with technical guidance from Jorge Rosa under the supervision of Masafumi Shiomitsu Sensei. The coaching staff is approved by the FNKP.
- 2000
Hombu Dojo Santarém
The association focuses on a single school in Santarém, with Fernando Macedo Pires and Hugo da Costa as head instructors. At the Millennium Championship in Guildford they both take 3rd place, in individual kata and individual kumite.
- 2003
European runner-up
Competing for the Portuguese Wado Ryu national team in Budapest (Hungary), Fernando Macedo Pires becomes European runner-up in individual kata.
- 2010
European champion
At the WKA Eurocup in Rome, Fernando Macedo Pires wins the European kata title. A new generation of athletes starts collecting national podiums.
- Today
A new generation of ninjas
With a young and competitive kata team, AIKW keeps turning up at opens, tournaments and FNKP national championships — always as a family.
Batto Jutsu
The art of the Japanese sword
Beyond karate, AIKW has a long-standing connection to Batto Jutsu — the art of drawing and cutting with the Japanese sword — through Sueyoshi Akeshi Sensei.
A discipline that shares karate's values: precision, control, respect and complete concentration in every movement.
